CUNY Compact

The 2006 City University budget was a revolutionary one for public higher education, included in the proposal were several financial management reorganizations, and most importantly full funding for all mandatory costs, and 20% funding for improvements.   CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein stated “I have never heard of any public university submitting a plan like the Compact…we’re really taking control of finances here.”

USS Chairperson and Student Trustee Robert Ramos expressed gratitude to the Chancellery for commitments to involve students in the distribution of funds from the compact.  “The pledges by Chancellor Goldstein and Vice Chancellor Malave are good steps.”  The compact also includes a modest fee increase, however, at the behest of the Chancellor compact establishes monies for students that may be adversely effected economically.

At the November 27th Board of Trustee meeting, the 2006-07 version of the compact came before the board for final approval.  After reading a brief statement in which Trustee Ramos stated “look forward to working with … the administrations to continue our efforts to enhance student lives and their education in the City University of New York.” the budget proposal passed unanimously.
